RECENT FORUMS

2009
On June 22, 2009, The O'Neill Studio Forum was led by Marian Seldes, who won a Tony award for Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance

Resident and Independent Aritsts young presented monologues from O'Neill plays followed by dialogue with Ms. Seldes. Ms. Seldes has also appeared in numerous O'Neill Studio performances including those with fellow Tony honorees Zoe Caldwell, Brian Murray and Frank Wood.

The Forum concluded a process that included sessions at The Atlantic Theater Company as well participation in The O'Neill Studio Retreat in Provincetown.

A special feature of the evening was a toast to Tracee Chimo, a former Independent Artist in the O'Neill Studio, who recently made her Broadway debut in Irena's Vow and garnered critical acclaim for her performance in the long-running play Circle Mirror Transformation at Playwrights Horizons.

2008
On November 2, 2008 at 7pm, The Players Foundation and The O'Neill Studio began their partnership with a celebration of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Eugene O'Neill, America's only Nobel Prize-winning playwright and winner of four Pulitzer Prizes, with a forum on the challenges of acting his plays.

Marian Seldes and Brian Murray engaged in a dialogue with O'Neill Studio artists for this occasion. The actors read selections from two O'Neill plays, Ile, written in 1917 and Long Day's Journey Into Night completed in 1941,

The pairing of these plays ignited discussion of the changing art of acting. Written nearly 25 years apart, Ile was written for actors of the theatrical tradition of 19th century stage. Long Day's Journey was originally performed by mid-20th century actors whose reach also extended to the screen.

Young artists of The O'Neill Studio, who have started their careers in the 21st century, asked Ms. Seldes and Mr. Murray about the changes in the art of acting as they have experienced them.

Playwrights Theater Artistic Director Stephen Kennedy Murphy, founder of The O'Neill Studio in New York and at Yale, moderates the forum.

The O'Neill Studio is a project of Playwrights Theater of New York.
