Writing your first play can be a thrilling but disappointing experience, so a mentor can make all the difference in whether you attempt a second one. Without critique and encouragement, a promising voice can be silenced forever.
Stephen Kennedy Murphy, who has had his writing has published in The New Yorker and performed in venues at Lincoln Center, The Provincetown Playhouse and The Irish Repertory Theatre has sought to provide mentorship by creating a structure by which playwrights mentor each other.
Through The O’Neill Studio at Yale, playwrights from the Yale School of Drama were linked in mentorship with Yale college students who in turn mentored local high school students in a “chain of mentors” anchored in a study of O’Neill. One new play was then selected from each level for production subsequent to a master class on it with a prominent Yale alumnus.
Building on the work at Yale, In 2025 resident playwrights in The O'Neill Studio mentored each other while looking to Eugene O'Neill as a literary mentor. The result is the e-book OF GUNS AND GOD, which is available at the following link:

This forum, which was first inaugurated by preeminent director of O’Neill, Jose Quintero, has ignited the imaginations of young theatre artists through evenings featuring appearances by Oscar and Tony-winning actors, among them Liam Neeson, Zoe Caldwell and Marian Seldes.
The Studio also explores O’Neill’s creative beginnings through the biographical lens of Stephen’s mentor Arthur Gelb, a former managing editor of The New York Times whose O'Neill books co-written with his wife Barbara Gelb are the foundation of Playwrights Theater’s exploration of O’Neill.
Theater is the most human of spoken mediums. New voices need to be nurtured to be heard. By linking playwrights and their mentors, Playwrights Theater seeks to invest in the future.
